Thanksgiving is over and winter is officially here, so it’s time to start preparing for your Christmas Break vacation to sunny Jupiter, Florida. Vacation is the perfect time to try something new. While you may have tried a variety of other watersports, you may not have tried your hand at paddleboarding. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is the fastest growing watersport in the world. Rent one of our SUPs at Beach Water Sports for a great core workout and a new way to enjoy the open water.

Paddleboarding

Step One: The Board

The paddleboard is wide to afford stability and comfort. Look for calm, flat water for a stable platform, and take the board out into deep enough water so the fin doesn’t touch the ocean floor.

Step Two: Standing

Start out on your knees and take a few strokes on each side of the board using your hands or the paddle. Slowly stand up, and stay in the middle of the board with feet parallel and shoulder-width apart. This is a test of balance and core strength, so keep a slight bend in the knees, and remain centered on the board for stability.

Step Three: Paddling

Once you’ve maintained your balance, it’s time to get some distance in the water. You only have one paddle, so alternate strokes on either side to move in a straight line. Hold the paddle with one hand at the top of the handle and the other hand on the shaft of the paddle, with arms shoulder-width apart. Shift the direction of your torso to steer while keeping a low stance and pulling the paddle in the water in the desired direction.
